Bridal Do’s & Don’ts!

As a former bridal stylist, I often get asked “where do I even begin to find my dream wedding dress?” For some brides this can be the most magical part of their wedding journey, but for others it’s a minefield! Knowing where to start will really make a difference to your experience.

There are several factors to consider when bridal shopping, here are my do’s & don’ts!

Don’t bring a crowd! The most relaxed appointments are those where the bride brings their nearest & dearest friends or family members. 2-3 guests are more than enough, your opinion is the one that matters the most!

Do, trust your stylist! Always remember, they have the advantage of seeing these dresses on every day and can advise you on what they think will work for you based on their expertise.

Don’t judge a dress on the hanger! This is one of the most common mistakes brides make. Often brides will put on a dress that they would have skipped past on the hanger but fall in love with it once its on. If your stylist suggests it, it’s always worth the try.

Do set a budget! A bridal gown can range anywhere from £500 to £5000! Always make sure you are setting yourself an ideal spend, and let your stylist know so they can guide you towards the correct price point.

Don’t take too many photos at your bridal appointment! Brides can drive themselves crazy over analysing their photographs! Of course, snapping a couple to look back on never hurts, but always remember to focus on how you felt in the dress!

Do try on different styles. Even if you think you know what you like, always try on a few different silhouettes or fabrics, you’ll be surprised how often a bride who thought she loved satin walks away with sparkles!

Don’t delay shopping! Depending on the designer, dresses can take anywhere up to 4-8 months to be made and shipped, and then always factor in an additional 2 months before your wedding date for alterations. If you have less time than this, don’t panic! There are many bridal shops that offer being able to buy off the rail and taking away on the same day.

Do enjoy it!! Shopping for your wedding dress can be one of the most emotional, memorable experiences with your nearest and dearest. Take the time to relax and enjoy the experience!
